The Fuck is Going On in Arizona?
Seriously. What is going on there? Between the immigration laws, the gun laws, and the anti women laws, I have to wonder if Arizona is magically in the 1940s. A few days ago, Arizona governor Jan Brewer passed a law banning public funds going towards Planned Parenthood. You do not need a permit to carry a concealed weapon in Arizona. Law enforcement is able to demand citizenship papers on anyone who “looks” illegal. Let’s see how these rules have played out recently.
Let’s start with the gun laws. Anyone over 21 is allowed to carry a concealed gun without a permit. In 2011, a crazy person named Jared Loughner shot US Representative Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat. A few days ago, JT Ready, shot and killed 4 people, including a 15 month old child before shooting himself. He was a neo-Nazi and former Republican Party official who started a vigilante group that patrolled the Arizona/Mexico border. So yeah, those laws are really working for society.
Next we have the immigration laws that are currently being debated in the Supreme Court. My argument here is that this country was founded by two types of people. Natives (who have had almost all of their land and culture removed) and everyone else, who by definition were immigrants. Those immigrants are what we call “Americans”. These people left their old countries for various reasons and tried to make a successful life in the land of opportunity. An opportunity that shouldn’t be shared with Mexicans, evidently. Why don’t we worry about Canadians taking our jobs? I’m not sure about the rest of the world but in Seattle, most of the taxi drivers are from Ethiopia, yet I’ve never heard anyone take a stand against them. What is it about Mexicans that scare Republicans so much?
Next the health care laws that basically forbid women from getting health care unless it is approved by the Republicans that run Arizona. I’m not a woman, so I can’t say I understand what women go through, but I do know that certain things are preventative, like pap smears, and should be done yearly. Many women in this country don’t have health insurance to pay for these necessary tests that can detect Cervical Cancer, so they use services like Planned Parenthood that offers low or no cost health care. Sounds like a great system, except that since 3% of Planned Parenthood’s services include abortion, stupid person Jan Brewer will not allow money to go to them.
A friend of mine has come up with the solution. It’s time for the people of Arizona to take their state back from these people who hold on to antiquated beliefs. I’m worried, however, that many people in Arizona actually agree with these laws but I implore Arizona’s liberal and smart people to take a stand and get rid of these oppressive, ignorant and hateful laws.
