    The Oddity of Culture

I find the concept of culture interesting. Humans find group acceptance through culture. Part of their identity comes from the culture. Naturally, culture evolves over time. The more open minded you are when it comes to interracial relationships, the more cultures will blend. When you think about it, lots of things are part of our culture that we don’t realize. Let’s say that your family has pasta every Thursday. That’s part of your culture. One definition of “culture” is “a set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution, organization, or group“.

    Phone Etiquette/Generally Rude Motherfuckers

This started out as a Twitter Tweet Twitlog, but I got so angry, the rant kind of exploded. Enjoy. It’s so fucking condescending to come to the counter (be it at the grocery store, at the mall, hotel, or whatever) ON THE PHONE, and still expect the clerk to do their job. How am I supposed to check you out properly? I’m supposed to confirm method of payment and the charges, let alone get a signature. But if I do that, then I am interrupting your oh so important call. The other option is the passive aggressive option (which I prefer). I wait. Eventually they will realize that I won’t…

    The Burden of Logic

One of the things that frustrates me is the lack of logical arguments people have. I understand that people have their own opinions, and I encourage that, but have a REASON for your opinions. Too often I am confronted with people that have beliefs, and when confronted with facts that disprove those beliefs, shrug it off saying, “everyone has the right to their own opinions.” I quote the great Scott Adams, “When did ignorance become a point of view?” Just because you want to believe something, doesn’t make it true.

Why Physical Discipline is Physical Abuse

Let’s talk about physical discipline. There are two lines of thought about it. One says that it has existed forever, that their parents did it, and that it “worked for them”. The other side of the argument is that it is physical abuse, is a crime both legally and morally, and that it is ineffective. Obviously I take the latter view. Here I shall explain why. In full disclosure, I was physically disciplined as a child, so my views are biased. At the end, I have included source information. I highly encourage everyone on both sides of this issue to read the last source.

The Evils of Prenatal Drug Use

I think that people should be able to do whatever they want, as long as it doesn’t negatively affect others. If you want to drink, fine. If you want to drink and then drive your car and potentially kill someone else, then I am against it. If you want to smoke weed, fine. If you want to smoke weed and watch a bunch of Carrot Top movies, then I am against it. If you want to do crack, fine. If you want to do crack and then go rob a store, then I am against it.

    Adoption Again

I had a short, though frustrating, conversation yesterday with someone. We were talking about how Steve Jobs was adopted. I said that the biological parents should be rewarded for giving their child a chance through adoption. He said that it was the parents obligation to raise the child and if they couldn’t raise the child, they shouldn’t have sex.

    Communication

I don’t know why, but something has happened to our society where the ability to effectively communicate has been lost. More than that, it has been shunned. People now take pride in their illiteracy. I often hear things like “well that’s just the way I speak” or “you know what I mean”. The worst is “I type the way I speak”. The last one implies that not only can they no longer proofread, but they are also idiots in real life, too.

    Birth Control Legislation

Effective August 2012, all health plans must cover birth control and preventative screenings for women. The conservatives are against this because, well, because liberals support the idea. Now I may have voiced my opinions on reproduction in the past. I know. I never speak my mind. Anyway, my argument has been that people are having children, but not raising them properly. They grow up in dysfunctional family systems (addiction, abuse, neglect, etc), but society has brainwashed everyone to think that having children is the end-all/be-all of human life. So rather than treat the psychological and physical effects of this trauma, they just have their own children and pass the trauma…

    Boycott Barnes and Noble

Story time. In a couple of weeks I am going to have surgery. (Yay vasectomy) Because of this, I will be taking a week off of work. I figured this would be a great time to do some reading. I have been interested in the Middle East conflict for a while, and a friend recommended a history book on the subject. I looked on Barnes and Noble’s website and saw the book available new for $50. While I was looking around the site I saw the Harry Potter collection for $50 as well. I liked the movies and someone suggested I read the books too. I wasn’t intending on buying…
